On the eight-track album sampler I have from Go West Young Man, frontman Damin Suarez shows he could hold his own with either of the Bens — Folds or Kweller. Whether its bounce comes from the piano or guitar, the music Suarez makes with Mathew Nakamura and Joe Edwards is catchy as flypaper. The band’s debut will be released Feb. 3 on One Cell Records, and the following track nods to Suarez’s old home turf, West Covina.

Nightfur’s fall 2007 debut “She Lives” seemed to me only an energy shake or two away from the psych-pop pantheon, a pleasant excursion along the ruminative edges of the 1960s, only updated. Now singer-guitarist Jason Brown (a filmmaker who is in postproduction on a movie that shares his band’s name) is already readying the release of the trio’s sophomore album, “Illusions,” due before the end of this year. “Blue Planet,” its first single, harmonizes beautifully over chugging rhythms and tempered effects. Nice.
