There was one main menu item at last weekend’s Port of Los Angeles Lobsterfest – the popular shellfish that had everybody going crustacean-crazy. The music, however, was much more of a sampler platter, and for those who partook of the tunes and the relaxed waterfront vibe, the offerings were indicative of how broad L.A.’s palate really is. Take Saturday, for instance:

You had energetic folk from Judson & Mary and sweet country from Leslie Stevens & the Badgers and the Gram Rabbit side project the Country to kick off the afternoon. Then young rockers We Barbarians and AWOLNation took over, leading into the surf/garage pop of the Growlers, the spacey desert electro of Gram Rabbit and the indie soul of Fitz & the Tantrums. The Cambodian psych-pop of Dengue Fever capped the proceedings. The night included some dancing, plenty of folks showing off their $5 lobster hats and an intrusion by Gram Rabbit’s alien friends, one of whom spanked Jesika von Rabbit after she upended her keyboard. Naughty.

The lighter moments continued on Sunday, when John Doe and Exene Cervenka – in the middle of “Give Me Flowers While I’m Living” – were interrupted by the horn of a departing cruise ship. See what happens 1:04 into the song.

Yeah, the lobster was tasty too.
