Ears Wide Open: Pageants

by seraphina on May 12, 2011

Rebecca Coleman may have parted ways with Avi Buffalo, but she hasn’t left music behind. Forming a new band called Pageants with guitarist Devin O’Brien, Coleman is now offering more than backing vocals. Occasionally known to flesh the group’s sound out with ex-Buffalo Arin Fazio and Lia Braswell (of Therapies Son) on drums, Pageants doesn’t wander far from the sunny, laid-back sounds of Long Beach. However, having Coleman up front and center with keys traded in for a guitar, finally allows us to hear stories from her own soothing yet bold perspective. In the few songs they’ve released online, Coleman has already displayed her strength in crafting robust pop melodies. Poignant vocals, naked layers of guitar strumming and looping alone draw comparisons to former L.A. artist Blair but also recall a bit of early Liz Phair. Pageants has recently recorded a few studio tracks with Best Coast’s Bobb Bruno.
