Download: ‘Newermind,’ the tribute to Nirvana’s ‘Nevermind’ curated by SPIN magazine

SPIN magazine devotes its new issue to the 20th anniversary of Nirvana’s “Nevermind” — “the album [well, one of them, anyway] that changed everything.” Going beyond the usual words and pictures, though, the magazine solicited 13 artists to cover the songs on “Nevermind” for a free compilation titled “Newermind.” Included are two legendary artists Kurt Cobain famously covered — the Meat Puppets (who dial down “Smells Like Teen Spirit”) and the Vaselines (who dial down “Lithium”). Standouts include Butch Walker & the Black Widows (who have some fun with “In Bloom”), Titus Andronicus (who roar through “Breed”) and Telekinesis (crunch good at “On a Plain”). Jessica Lea Mayfield, Amanda Palmer, Surfer Blood and Charles Bradley are among the others who play along. The album will be available here next Tuesday for free download, or …
