Mika Miko’s demise in 2009 may have left L.A. fans of female punk bands heartbroken, but with former members toting their creativity in to new projects here and there, fresher hooks have risen from the ashes. Reminding the Dum Dum Girls who were here first, sisters Jessica and Jennifer Clavin (along with band members Kevin McCarthy and Danny Diaz) have been tunneling their skills into Bleached. They’ve already released two 7-inches this year that have spawned summer-soaked yet gritty guitar jams such as “Think of You” and “Dazed.” Now they’re preparing for their third release through Seattle’s Suicide Squeeze on Dec. 6, and the title track “Searching Through the Past” features their stickiest sing-along choruses yet (something that Mika Miko always seemed to dodge). Bleached has a sound that perfectly plays with the line between innocence and rebellion. If we were all teens again, their sweet sound on the surface would be winning enough for approval from Mom and Pops. But they also sound like the kind of ladies who would be successful at talking you in to taking several hits from the bong while spinning records in your parents’ basement.
