Ears Wide Open: Electric Guest

0

Perhaps the biggest problem with electro- and indie-soul these days is that so many other young artists are doing real soul so well. So forgive me if the test-tube R&B of Electric Guest – the collaboration of songwriters Asa Taccone and Matthew Compton – comes off as overly sanitized. Electric Guest has no shortage of buzz – their debut album “Mondo,” produced by Brian Burton (aka Danger Mouse), will come out April 24 on Downtown Records, and their Jorma Taccone-directed video hit MTV.com today, a day ahead of the release of the first single, “This Head I Hold.” The catchy-enough single glides on Asa Taccone’s squeaky-clean falsetto, which only encounters turbulence at about 30,000 feet when its encounters some seemingly obligatory tweaks. Because that’s cool.
