Coachella 2012: Le Butcherettes, simply possessed

0

Who: Le Butcherettes in the Gobi Tent.
In 3 or Fewer Words: Pretty satanic songstresses.
Memorable Because: Mexico’s garage punk duo-turned-trio (with the help from Omar Rodriguez-Lopez on bass) tore the stage up and gave me the heebie-jeebies at the same time, but it was great entertainment from beginning to end. Guitarist/keyboardist and lead vocalist Teri “Gender Bender” Suarez wore a floral sundress, as did her bandmate and drummer Lia Braswell, but there were moments when Suarez seemed like she was going through an exorcism several times. With hair whipping around, arms out, eyes rolled back while teeter-tottering at the front of the stage, a musical demon took form and it knew how to rock. While Braswell provided raging percussion, Suarez bellowed lyrics such as “I fell in love” and “Two weeks later / “I’m getting sick of you” and plunked out gothic chords on the keys or guitar. Bringing a mini Fairuza Balk circa “The Craft” era to mind, it was all deviously delicious and there was no red “stop” button when it came to her stage antics. Rolling on the floor, pouring water on her head, climbing the scaffold only to stop and do an acrobatic back bend in the air, and then, finally, running out onto the festival grounds as her fans followed.
What I’d Tell My Friends Who Were at Metronomy: The crazies always give a better show.
