Matt Ellis, “Candy” – The Sydney, Australia-born songwriter trotted the globe before sinking his roots in Venice a few years ago, which has turned out to be an excellent station for his finely honed Americana. Ellis’ 2011 album “Births, Deaths and Marriages,” his fourth full-length, came soaked in pedal steel and honesty. And the 38-year-old brings both to his take on Iggy Pop’s “Candy,” which he’s released as a single. Ellis performs a free show tonight (along with Kasey Chambers) as part of “Australia Rocks the Pier” at the Santa Monica Pier.

Nikki Forova, “Tunnels” – The Russian-American songstress released her EP “Revving Wings” in early July, earning comparisons to the likes of Imogen Heap and Tori Amos. At her fingertips, the Arcade Fire anthem becomes a lovely piano ballad.

Sara Radle, “Call It Off” – Fans of the L.A. based songstress (who earlier this year released her fifth album, “Same Sun Shines”) get a special treat if they subscribe to her email list – she’s been dispensing a cover song every few weeks. We loved her take on Austin’s Deathray Davies, but here we share “Call It Off,” from Tegan & Sara’s 2007 album “The Con.” Radle performs Sept. 15 at Lobsterfest.
