Ears Wide Open: Drab Majesty

1

Drab Majesty‘s sound is a psychedelic, warped foray into New Wave-influenced shoegaze, and it’s quite the departure for Andrew Clinco who also plays in L.A. band Incan Abraham. Writing music under a persona named “Deb Demure,” Clinco’s debut EP “Unarian Dance” is a cooling amalgamation of his baritone drenched in reverb, swirling synths and driving bass lines. It’s the Cure meets Slowdive meets outer space – essentially a whirlwind of DIY experimentalism. Emma Ruth Rundle of Nocturnes and Marriages also contributes harmonies on tracks “In a Hotel (Somewhere)” and “Wrecking Ball.” But the first track off the EP is especially enticing with the gentle guitar intro splashing into a prominent synth arpeggio and a bass line so dark it drapes the entire arrangement. Drab Majesty’s “Unarian Dance” is also on a limited edition cassette run.
