Ears Wide Open: Pretty Little Demons

On Pretty Little Demons’ “Bag of Rocks,” singer Lydia Night laments that for her protagonist, burdened by the weights of the world, “the only way out is the big pine box.” Heavy stuff. Especially considering that Night is 12 years old. Her partner-in-rock, drummer Marlhy Murphy, is 10 – and, according to the press release, Pretty Little Demons hold the distinction of being the youngest-ever act to land an official showcase at the South by Southwest Music Festival (showcase: 8 p.m. Saturday at the Palm Door). The duo met at the Burbank School of Rock, Night having picked up the guitar at age 6 and started her first band at 7 and Murphy having come to L.A. to pursue acting (she drums in a Target commercial). The duo’s EP “Flowers” has four originals, a nifty cover of Tom Waits’ “I Don’t Wanna Grow Up” and a faithful rendition of Hole’s “Violet.” Pretty Little Demons have already gotten nods of approval from Exene Cervenka and Brett Anderson of the Donnas (both performed with the duo at a recent in-store at Amoeba). Having witnessed Chloe Chaidez (of Kitten) and Chris Bowman (of Bad Suns) play when they were a similar age, we’re pretty sure Night and Murphy are off to similarly good starts. Who knows what 2020 will bring?
