The Coachella Valley Music & Art Festival might be sold out, but attendees voted with their feet Friday night when it came to headliners Blur and the Stone Roses. The Britpop greats played to vast expanses of open lawn, fans opting for sets on the far side of the Empire Polo Grounds or hitting the road early for desert-adjacent parties.

In fact, the most-talked-about event on the main stage came after Modest Mouse’s meltdown, when the jumbo screens aired a 1 minute, 42-second video promo for Daft Punk’s forthcoming album “Random Access Memories.” Some fans even bolted toward the stage, anticipating a surprise performance from the French electro gods who last rocked Coachella in ’06.

Oh, there were highlights on a day perfect weather helped keep the energy high: a Bono sighting (does that qualify?); glistening sets from Beach House, Alt-J and Youth Lagoon; Flying Lotus on the decks for Earl Sweatshirt; Bon Iver’s guest turn with Polica; furious energy from Divine Fits, Japandroids and Palma Violets; Four Tet’s mind-blowing turn in the new Yuma Tent; and massive crowds in the behemoth Sahara Tent, where Bassnectar had a bigger midnight crowd than the main-stage headliner.

Our favorite T-shirt of the day: “Every you like, I liked 5 years ago.”
