Video: Yellow Red Sparks, ‘A Play to End All Plays’

Yellow Red Sparks’ self-titled debut, which came out in January, is not what you’d call dark. In fact, it’s kind of a ray of sunshine in an arena populated by floppy-hatted faux folkies – an album built on meticulous songcraft and orchestration that make music’s well-worn melancholic-to-hopeful mood swings seem fresh. Director Claire Marie Vogel (who has worked with Atlas Genius, Mutemath and Iron & Wine) takes the mournful “A Play to End All Plays” – something of an anomaly compared to the rest of the album – and turns it to film noir, with YRS front man Joshua Hanson as host and a children’s choir reminiscent of “Village of the Damned” presiding. Is love simply doomed?
