Video: HOTT MT, ‘YKWYR’

HOTT MT stands for “Hour of the Time, Majesty Twelve,” and the Los Angeles quintet is best known for its auspicious beginnings: The principals showed up unannounced on Wayne Coyne’s Oklahoma City doorstep to give him their album as a birthday present. While (surprisingly) welcoming them, he called them “weirdos,” which should tell you something. HOTT MT’s album “I Made This,” which just got a proper release via Manimal and does not include the song on which they collaborated with Coyne, is indeed weird. “I Made This” straddles the lines between psych-pop and shoegazing, between high-concept and schtick. HOTT MT is rather fearless when it comes to opening a vein of their own neuroses, and audacious in their unspoken assumption that because the music is not the same-ol’ same-ol’ – indie-rock, synth-pop, folk-rock, retro-pop, you fill in the blank – it somehow passes muster. Yet “I Made This” often does, even when it tries too hard. And songs like “YKWYR” (You Know When You’re Right) have an intrigue that suggests we might be witnessing the birth of something extraordinary. Certainly David Braun, who directed the video, captures that. Also instructive: The new remix of “YKWYR” by Oh Boy Les Mecs, which pretty much strips away everything except Ashleigh Allard’s vocals.
