Video premiere: Mark Lane, ‘The King of Silence’

Mark Lane has always been one to take his time and craft his songs. The follow-up to his 2003 album “Golden State of Mind” didn’t come until 2012, when he released “Something New.” But that’s part of Lane’s charm. Never mind that his vocals are reminiscent of Elvis Costello (although that certainly doesn’t hurt), the new record’s diverse sound palette is a nice sonic haven for pop fans. Some songs such as “Back in the Swing” and “Little Things” are endearing piano tunes whereas other songs such as “Please, Lillanne” and “Something New” are power-pop gems. “The King of Silence,” however, stands out as a somber ballad with a killer guitar solo near the end. If the track weren’t enjoyable enough, Lane has just completed a video with animator Leyla Akdogan (Loch & Key) for the song. As you watch a lonely character experience a mystical journey in black and white, Lane’s vocals perfectly soundtrack the ride.
