Ears Wide Open: Kauf

The output from L.A. producer Kauf has been sparse – two almost-perfect tracks, “When You’re Out” in 2012 and then “Relocate,” as well as a memorable remix of “Heart in the Pipes” back in 2011. They managed to sear four letters into the minds of many with huge drums, evil synths and a shared demeanor that would complement Raymond Chandler’s Los Angeles. Kauf’s neo-noir electro-saga continues with his most revealing release to date, the “As Much Again” EP, on Cut Copy’s Cutters Records. Shedding a dim ray of light on himself and his previously released music, Kauf (aka Ronald Kaufman) pairs “Relocate” and “When You’re Out” with two alluring new originals, “In Tow” and the lurking, apprehensive pop track “The Closest.” The EP begins without the expected bravado, lulling you with “In Tow” before moving on to more pressing matters. With a tension mirrored by “Relocate,” “The Closest” is reminiscent of Depeche Mode’s industrial period blended with the modern,  blurry electronica of Toro Y Moi or Washed Out. A pair of “Relocate” remixes from Nile Delta and Psychemagik round out the six-track EP that arrives along with an entrancing video for “Relocate.” Directed by Nathalia Acevedo, the clip explores the process of concealing deeply rooted unrest, and the endless demands of long-term masquerading. In addition to booking dates in support of the EP (and working on a full-length), Kauf plans on releasing a remix for ” Bloody Mouth” by Moons, and his new mixtape “Yatzerhythms” just landed on Yatzer.com.
