Ears Wide Open: Air Life

At just 23, Taylor Dexter has already made his mark on the L.A. music scene. He’s been especially busy the last year or two, drumming for both Hunter Hunted and Body Parts, and he also recently contributed percussion to Alina Cutrono’s solo project. However, since Air Life‘s live debut during Body Parts’ November residency last year, we’ve learned Dexter’s big love for R&B and soul. Air Life – whose members also include Vicky Nguyen on keys and vocals, Brad Babinski on bass guitar and Brijesh Pandya on drums – has Dexter front and center and wielding a guitar instead of drumsticks. His smokey vocals also factor into the charm. The band’s debut single “Tell Me Anything” (produced by Body Parts’ Ryder Bach and slated for an April 8 release via New Professor) is an impressive beginning. With its sparkling jazz riffs, funky bass lines and a heightened groove, it’s contemporary enough for the neo-soul lovers but also a throw-back for fans of the ’70s stylings of Stevie Wonder and Steely Dan. If you don’t end up on the dance floor, you’re probably calling your boo by the end of the song. Air Life’s arsenal is downright seductive and we’re looking forward to another hit. File next to Al B. Sure! and Chaka Khan.
