Video: Savages, ‘F*ckers’

Don’t let them get you down. Simple enough message, right? In the hands of U.K. post-punk quartet Savages, that mantra borders on physical assault. The 10-minute jam is the A-side of Savages’ new 12-inch released today, on the one-year anniversary of their debut album. And if you doubt for a second the primal ferocity that Jehnny Beth, Gemma Thompson, Fay Milton and Ayse Hassan bring to the table, director Giorgio Testi’s concert video for “Fuckers” might sway you. Beth, by the way, sheds some light on the song, and the band, in a piece she has authored for the Huffington Post. It’s worth your time: “My Year in Savages.”

Savages are great. But I find it hard to believe a band as committed as they are has produced something that sounds, to my aging ears, a throw-away. Sure, it’s fierce, but that simple message is too simple.
