The first single from Los Angeles trio Ghostel is part Motown rave-up, part retro-pop delirium and part playground taunt. And it’s “So Annoying” you probably will not be able to get the chorus out of your head. It’s the work of 21-year-old singer Bryce Buckmaster and the husband-and-wife team of Daniel Knowles and Jennifer Farmer. Knowles, of course, is well-known on the L.A. scene – as the sound engineer at the Bootleg, he’s a guy who sees more bands in a month than most people see in a year. Before the Englishman met his future bride and settled in L.A., he was the guitarist and producer for U.K. shoegazers Amusement Parks on Fire. Ghostel actually has its roots in Buckmaster’s former band, Volapike; Farmer, once the booker at Safari Sam’s, came across a demo from the teenage rockers, and eventually Knowles did some studio work with them. Fast-forward past Volapike’s demise, and the couple asked Buckmaster to lay down some vocals on one of their demos. Things clicked. Knowles says the trio’s ensuing recording sessions were “spontaneous, loose and a shitload of fun.” As if you can’t tell by the infectious “So Annoying,” the first track from Ghostel’s forthcoming EP.
