The elegant Theatre at Ace Hotel had a weekend-long love affair with fuzz when recently reunited English band Slowdive performed two special shows in downtown Los Angeles. Considered to be one of shoegaze’s most influential bands in the ’90s, an outdoor performance as part of FYF Fest earlier this summer was just not enough. With two nights completely sold-out, the seamless harmonies between Rachel Goswell and Neil Halstead floated into the crowd, who didn’t oppose Goswell’s request for fans to stand for the show, and danced among the various puffs of smoke that also found their way up into the air. In fact, Sunday night’s exhilarated attendees chose to stand and cheer while spilling out into the aisles to enjoy beloved songs like “Machine Gun,” “Souvlaki Space Station,” “When the Sun Hits” and “Alison.” Slowdive dove in with their eponymous tune from their self-titled debut EP from 1990 and ended it on a transcendant note with their cover of Syd Barrett’s “Golden Hair.” The Tyde preceded the night.
