Who: Jenny Lewis at the Outdoor Theatre
In 3 or Fewer Words: Jenny, Blake, Haim.
Memorable Because: On the strength of her new album “The Voyager,” Jenny Lewis came to Coachella poised to give a transformative experience. And wearing a rainbow-and-cloud pantsuit and performing in front of pastel-colored backdrop, she did, making dreams come true for every fan of her first band, Rilo Kiley. Yes, the rumors were true. There was a mini-reunion when Lewis introduced Blake Sennett, amid screams of delight and even some tears, before 2004’s “Portions For Foxes”: “My good friend and my twin from Rilo Kiley.” The amount of Rilo Kiley songs (“Money Maker,” “With Arms Outstretched”) Lewis included in her set should have been a hint, but whether or not fans were surprised by Sennett’s appearance, it was just one of the tricks she had up her pastel blue sleeve. After sitting down to play the keys on “Head Underwater” and singing oh-so-catchy and sweet “Silver Lining” (Sennett was not on stage for this one), Lewis introduced a new song titled “Girl on Girl,” but not before bringing out “coolest girls in the Valley … Haim!” With Danielle on drums, Este on bass and Alana on guitar, Lewis and the Haim sisters elicited some clap-along moments on the new track. “We’re all from the Valley, basically,” Lewis explained after thanking the sisters. “818 babies!” To cap off her charming set, Lewis dedicated the Rilo Kiley song “A Better Son/Daughter” to Sennett.
What I’d Tell My Friend Who Was At Vance Joy: There is no joy in hearing a whinier Jack Jackson attempting a Local Native sound.
