Fever the Ghost

L.A. psych-rockers Fever the Ghost have been out-weirding-out just about everything in their path since 2013, when they arrived on the scene, ostensibly by interstellar transport. Beyond making you believe in parallel universes, their music is rife with experimentation, a web of synths, guitar and vocals speaking to each other in a seemingly foreign tongue. This week, the band — Casper Indrizzo, Bobby Victor, Nicolas Overhauser and Mason Rothschild — announced their debut “Zirconium Meconium” will be out Sept. 25, and none other than the Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne chimes in with this: “Listening to this … it sounds like Rush making a version of ‘Satanic Majesties Request’ … Only yeah, it’s 1968 and the Rolling Stones don’t make ‘Satanic Majesties Request’ — Rush do. And Rush are like 13 years old.” Like the teaser single — full title “Vervain (Dreams of an Old Wooden Cage)” — it will no doubt be a lot to digest, even for those who finally got their ears around Fever the Ghost’s early-2014 EP “Crab in Honey.” The album is described by the band as a “collection of songs musically interpreting the third dimensional integration process from the perspective of vital force energy incarnating into the physical world.” Which almost sounds like it would involve too much coursework to simply plug in and play, except that the visceral appeal of their “sci-fi pop” makes it worth the investment.
