A song that might best be enjoyed lingering in a hot bath with the lights off, “Along” is the second single from “Morning World,” the newest Teen Daze album, due Aug. 14 on Paper Bag Records. Teen Daze — aka the Canadian producer who goes by the mononym Jamison — says, “This is not a record that I made at home, and you can tell. This is truly the sound of me working through the events in my life that needed to be worked through.” Imagine him, walking the streets of Vancouver where he’s from, enveloped in some kind of numbing mind cloud that shrouds his body from the cold, then finding himself on top of a snowy mountain, and writing a song that’s gloomy, naked, and full of that particular relief that comes from escapism. Or he wrote it on his couch, who knows. Up to this point, Teen Daze has been more or less a bedroom recording project, but for his sixth record since 2010 (quite prolific, this guy), Jamison recorded with John Vanderslice and co-producer Simon Bridgefoot at Tiny Telephone, an all-analog studio in San Francisco. Recording to tape feels just right for this music. It’s like wrapping a warm blanket around his hunched shoulders.
