From a bummer situation, a person can rise up like a phoenix out of the ashes and kick their blues away. Here’s an example. While recovering from divorce, Wax Idols’ Hether Fortune set about writing music that would lift her out of the doldrums without wasting time on self-pity. The result is “American Tragic,” the band’s third album and its first for Collect Records, out Oct. 16. Finding fortitude in self-reliance, Fortune wrote and performed everything but the drums, which are played by Rachel Travers, and she co-produced the album with Monte Vallier. She emphasizes that this is not just a collection of break-up songs, but an album about getting back together with yourself, and finding comfort in your own strength, rather than focusing on outward relationships. Fortune says, “The whole spectrum of grief is represented here — shock, pain, anger, loneliness, and then finding a way to work through all of that and not only survive, but thrive. That’s what I was going through. I was kind of trying to save myself.” Lead single “Lonely You” is moody but encouraging, a hefty slice of dark pop empathy.
