Rob Zabrecky segued from an audacious three-album run in the ’90s with beloved L.A. rockers Possum Dixon to an enviable career as a magician and actor. But recent months have found his returning to music — even if his recent gig at Dirty Laundry TV’s Summer Fest included a little magic too. It turns out Zabrecky has an EP in the works; “Some Days” will be out in November. “After a few performances at nightclubs in L.A., the idea of performing live music seemed like a good idea again,” he says. “This time the stakes are not as high — I’m doing it for the sole purpose of a love for playing live music.” He also recently released a music video that can only be described as a “double cover.” He sings a version of Blondie’s “Dreaming” — but the video is an homage to Gene Pitney singing his 1964 hit “I’m Gonna Be Strong.” Says Zabrecky: “I’ve loved ‘Dreaming’ since it was released and have been hearing it most of my life. When a friend asked me to record a song at his studio, it seemed like the only choice. And, after seeing Gene Pitney’s ‘I’m Gonna be Strong’ video, I thought it would be interesting idea to ‘cover’ a video and became attracted to the idea of a cover song and cover video from two very different bands/singers.” It turned out pretty magical.
