Diet Cig are a guitar-and-drums duo from New Paltz, N.Y., doing stripped-down and slightly grungey power-pop that sounds right out of a backyard party in 1995 (and maybe right into the catalog of K Records). In February, guitarist Alex Luciano and drummer Noah Bowman released the “Over Easy” EP on Father/Daughter Records, and they’ve followed it up with the 7-inch “Sleep Talk” (b/w “Dinner Date”). Hard not to fall for their lo-fi charm, especially with Luciano innocently admitting “I can’t play instruments very well / and I’ll eat all of your cereal” in “Sleep Talk.” The video for “Dinner Date,” directed by Christopher Daly and Alex Antiuk, finds Luciano taking on all comers in an arm-wrestling competition. This is not the way we remember holding hands on dinner dates. Or is it?
