“You break up … Never talk again. You just want to know if they cried.” Liphemra’s Liv Marsico speaks to a human truth, that crushing blow and point of pride, we just want to know that we mattered enough to cry about. Between tears, Marsico and her collaborators spent much of this year in the studio finishing up the “Did U Cry” EP, set to be released next March by Future Gods, and here we have the title track. “All self-recorded … all self-produced in our shitty rehearsal space in Mid-City,” she says. The recording might be home-made, but that lo-fi magic unleashes creativity. The aggressive guitar and dark disco-vibing rhythm section are sweetened by Marsico’s earnest voice repeating the question. It’s a break-up song full of angst and mumbling insecurity, but this broken heart is dancing her way through the gloom, riding the bass line like a wild, wounded warrior. Sometimes Liphemra’s music is challenging, forcing the listener to release preconceived notions and open their mind. Ultimately it pushes experimental pop forward, draws you in and makes you pay attention.
