Orange County’s Jake McMullen is taking well to his new surroundings in Nashville. The 22-year-old singer-songwriter, who fronted the indie-rock band York and released two EPs (one a collaboration with Ellex Bree) all before he was old enough to have a legal drink, has unveiled his first new work after his big move. McMullen’s “Always” EP, released in October, reflects on leaving and arriving, and the uncertainty of new adventures. Yes, there is a folk singer’s melancholy in his twangy meditations, but in his throaty vocals there’s also a steely resolve far beyond his years. And he’s just getting started.
