Breaking Heights

“High,” the first single from new Los Angeles trio Breaking Heights, begins like a vaguely druggy Britpop anthem from the 1990s, but that’s just the set-up. Just before the 2-minute mark, a rapid-fire rap verse kicks in, declaring, among other things, “I can’t get enough of the dream.” Neither can we. It’s an impressive marriage of psych-pop and hip-hop, and it happened almost by accident. Collaborators Ozzy Doniz, a producer from Mexico City, and Cleveland-bred singer Greg Cahn (both of Mind the Gap) worked with Detroit-bred rapper Brandon “Bizoh” Hicks on music for the end title of the music for HBO’s “Gideon’s Army.” It grew into a side project, and when Doniz and Cahn arrived at the skeleton for “High,” the duo decided the song “should have a twist on the second verse,” Cahn explains. So they jumped in the car and drove to Bizoh’s house. Says Cahn: “The capture took 10 minutes. And within two hours, and a 16-bar Bizoh verse, Breaking Heights was created.” The trio’s momentum carried over; they plan to release an EP in the new year.
