Young L.A. quintet the Knitts have been sharpening their licks for a couple of years now, making garage-rock-cum-post-punk that sizzles with the defiance of youth. Their in-your-face fervor isn’t all bad-boy stuff; the Knitts are prone to mood swings, and singer-keyboardist Justin Volkens has even been known to bust out a ukulele. But they aren’t playing nice on their new single “Get Up Get Out,” a post-punker with a throbbing bass line and stabbing/scrawling guitars. The band — Volkens and his guitar-slinging brother Charlie, along with guitarist Victor Portillo, bassist Jaime Nahum Luque and drummer Brandon Saige Sinclair — have been working on new tunes with producer Michael Leonhart (the Steely Dan trumpeter who has worked with a host of A-listers). This new one leaves only one question unanswered: Which one of these miscreants pulled the fire alarm?
