First impression: This looks a like a lot more fun that producing. Dave Trumfio, who owns L.A.’s Kingsize Soundlabs and has credits on records by the likes of Wilco, Sia, the Rentals, Grandaddy, My Morning Jacket, OK Go and Built To Spill, became the latest producer to do a band frolic last year when he assembled Viktor Fiction. Released in October, their five-song EP of Devo- and Cars-flavored New Wave, “Selected Transmissions,” is not far sonically from the band that brought the Chicago native to Southern California back in the 1990s, the Pulsars. In Viktor Fiction, he is abetted by veteran players Celso Estrada, Michael Sanger and Keith Ruggiero, who enable Trumfio’s nerd-on-a-bender tendencies. In director Ronna Reason’s everything-new-is-old-again video for the single “Love and Addiction,” Trumfio leads a party in the studio. We see black-and-white, but we feel glowing face paint and laser lights.
