As one might intuit from his musical moniker T.O.L.D. — which stands for The Order of Life and Death — Dan Smith doesn’t write sticky paeans to love. He’s tackling some larger existential issues, which makes it amusingly paradoxical that his new single is titled “There’s No Truth” and yet involves a gospel choir. (Even more improbable, said gospel choir is asked to sing that life is a “dance with the devil.”) Smith, a 26-year-old Englishman based in L.A., worked with producer Tom Biller on the lush track, which builds from spare ballad into a hymn. T.O.L.D. is working on a larger release for L.A.-based IAMSOUND Records, and it’s welcome to hear somebody advancing the synth-pop ballad beyond the parochial.
