David J & the Gentlemen Thieves

You know David J (born David John Haskins) from his role as bassist for Bauhaus and Love and Rockets, and if you’ve followed along, from his exploits as a solo artist, producer, composer and writer. However you probably won’t find him hanging out at the neighborhood Starbucks, if you are to believe the first single from his new band David J & Gentlemen Thieves. “Gentrification Blues” is a gritty psychedelic rocker that rails against corporate encroachment on diverse neighborhoods — “a cure for urban blight at the cost of soul,” he sings. The song was released last week as a 7-inch single via Starry Records, with “Horrible Cocoon” by Darwin as the B-side and artwork from guerilla poster artist Robbie Conal. In his new band, David J teams up with veteran L.A. hands Darwin Meiners, Tommy Dietrick, Joel Patterson and Chris Vibberts, who originally got together when David J played the 2013 Desert Stars Festival at Pappy & Harriet’s.
