L.A.-dwelling Welsh songwriter Cate Le Bon‘s new album, “Crab Day,” on Drag City Records, is a delightful trip through sequestered memories, fleeting observations and words that play on words that play on feelings, angular guitar lines, and imperfectly perfect moments. “Love is not love when it’s a coathanger,” she sings, and in that seemingly nonsensical phrase there is great wisdom. The track’s video brings us back to the same Berlin theater where Phil Collins shot a short film for “Crab Day,” with funky dancers making shapes as Le Bon wanders around them. If inquiring minds want to know, the term “Crab Day” refers to a holiday created by Le Bon’s niece, who rejected April Fool’s Day and instead decided to celebrate April 1st by drawing pictures of crabs. We get it.
