Ears Wide Open: Cerise

Cerise

Some things take time. We first heard an early version of the title track to Cerise’s debut album “Smoke Screen Dreams” about five years ago at an intimate live performance. The singer-songwriter (and model and photographer) — full name Cerise Leang — began working on her music years ago under the tutelage of Joseph Arthur. But the completion of her album took a back seat to her education at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Now she’s graduated, and complete with a mix done by Matt Boynton (Bat For Lashes/MGMT), the album is finished and set for a June 24 release. “Smoke Screen Dreams” is gauzy, gothic dream-pop that reflects the dark ’80s music Cerise loves — the Cure, Bauhaus, Siouxsie — and her brooding worldview. Fans of the fuzzy detachment of Mazzy Star and various shoegazing acolytes may find some mesmerizing moments here.
