Portland, Ore.-born singer-songwriter Alexandra Savior calls her aesthetic “sassy impolite spaghetti Western music,” and we’re not sure what’s more captivating, her sharp-tongued impertinence or the torchy vocals that seem to come from a room so smoky you’d have trouble discerning the chanteuse. “Shades” is the first single from a forthcoming full-length produced by Arctic Monkeys main man Alex Turner and James Ford (Florence and the Machine, HAIM, Jessie Ware). Savior, 21, has already test-driven some of the songs in big rooms (including opening for the Last Shadow Puppets in April); as she told NME, they were recorded in L.A. with engineer Michael Harris, bassist Zach Dawes, Turner and Ford. As cool as the cinematic splashes are in the single, it’s just compelling to hear Savior’s wordplay, elucidating the many nuances of “Shades.”
