Over the course of three albums, Midnight Faces has grown from one man to a fully collaborative party of three. On 2013’s “Fornication,” Phil Stancil brought vocals to Matthew Doty’s already written songs. The two wrote 2014’s “The Fire Is Gone” together and, now, “Heavenly Bodies” sees drummer Paul Doyle in the mix, completing the band. The result is a varied collection of songs. There’s plenty of swirling heavily affected guitar and synth at play, but this post-rock band weaves elements of psych pop and rambler rock (let’s call it The Boss’s rock) into a melodic, highway chasing, heartbeat pumping sound. Then there’s a surprise, like the saxophone on “Germanium,” shaking things up with that uplifting 1980’s sort of sentimentality. Take “Blue Haze” and “Party Donna,” the first two tracks on the album, which almost divide the Midnight Faces sound in half—both kick at a fast pace, the first overtaken by space noise, and the second, a digital drum delight running in place.
