On Friday night, Twin Shadow paid tribute to Prince by performing “Purple Rain” in its entirety at the Masonic Lodge at Hollywood Forever. Twin Shadow’s George Lewis Jr. explained to the audience how the idea came about: “On the day that Prince died, I rushed to my studio to write a song, or to cover one of his songs. I felt obligated as an artist to dedicate something to him. … I realized that the magic inside of his recordings cannot be replicated, and it certainly just has to stand on it own. And I thought, why not do something that is momentary, like life, and just perform a few shows?” This show will only be performed twice, unless someone wants to give him a million dollars, in which case he would use the money to buy Paisley Park, he joked. While most of the songs stayed close to the originals, they added a unique spin to a few, including a Nine Inch Nails’ “Closer”-style version of “Darling Nikki” and a dark, powerful rendition of “When Doves Cry.” HAIM made a surprise appearance on “Little Red Corvette.” They also performed “Starfish And Coffee,” that Sesame Street favorite. It was a lot of fun in a hot little room.
