SadGirl has moved up the L.A. garage-rock food chain by writing songs that are tighter, playing them with more authority and looking better doing it. The band of cousins — singer-guitarist Misha Lindes, bassist Dakota Peterson and drummer Paul Caruso — are neither melancholy nor female; they are, instead, devotees of a retro rock ’n’ roll sound equally indebted to ’70s punk and forebears who practiced surf, doo-wop and rockabilly. When not designing cool merch and stuff (your parallel here would be Hanni El Khatib), the trio has released two EPs, the last in November, and the new single “Going Down” is from “Vol. 3” (out Oct. 7). Amid the blissful amp squalor you’ll hear from half the bands playing next month’s Beach Goth, you might find a hard-hitting song of the kind that will get SadGirl out of the small print on the festival poster.
