Tourist, aka William Phillips, came on the stage at the El Rey Theatre on Friday night yelling “Los Angeles!” in his British accent, sharing his excitement before launching into music from his long-awaited debut album “U,” released by Monday Records this past May. For the most part he let the music do the talking, stopping only to introduce a new piece of music. Needless to say, his EDM set hardly resembled the Grammy-winning song he co-wrote with Sam Smith, “Stay With Me,” but the audience lapped up Phillips’ anthemic explorations of dance voraciously. Brooklyn’s Jim-E Stack charmed the early crowd to join him near the stage, blending a continuous set of genre jumping dance music, with only one pause mid-set to jokingly ask the crowd for a hair-tie.
