The lyrics to “Astral Plane” came to Valerie June while cooking in her Brooklyn kitchen, her favorite place to receive the muse. Although initially written for Massive Attack, June ended up getting to keep the song. Aside from her soothing, pretty voice, the most intriguing thing about June’s music is the gentle inclusion of unexpected elements, like the ambient sounds on “Astral Plane” which elevate what is otherwise a smooth, straightforward, soul-pop song. Following her 2013 debut, “Pushin’ Against a Stone,” June’s next album, “The Order Of Time,” produced by Matt Marinelli (Beck, Bad Brains), arrives Jan. 27 through Concord Records. She says, the “inevitability of change” and “time as the ruler of Earth’s rhythm,” are the album’s grounding elements, “and the knowledge that with resilience and faith things can work out.”
