Stream: Decorator, ‘Circles’

Funk-’n’-pop fun bunch Decorator have spent the better part of a year recalibrating (the business side of this whole music thing was a factor), but the L.A. quartet today unveiled their first new music in two years. “Circles,” the L.A. quartet’s first release since their “Transit” EP in mid-2014, finds the band — brothers Alix, Miles and Reece Melendrez along with Matt Mumcian — showing their silkier, psychedelic side. They call what they do “ghost-funk synth-pop,” but we’ll shorten that to “ooh-baby.” The band got their start around 2012 after honing their chops at the Silverlake Conservatory of Music, spurred on by years of raiding their parents’ shelves for records by the likes of the Isley Brothers, the Doors, Jimi Hendrix and Toots & the Maytals. “Circles'” 3-minute dollop of neo-soul belies how hard Decorator can rock when called upon; they profess to have more on the way for 2017, so stay tuned.
