Contrary to many of their contemporaries, fledgling L.A. quartet Night Talks are forging a polished, atmospheric sound, led by frontwoman Soraya Sebghati’s soaring vocals, the sonic equivalent of journal entries in ALL CAPS. “Cutting Through” is the fourth single on Night Talks’ debut album “In Dreams,” which arrives Feb. 10, and bold and sleek as it is, Sebghati says it was “inspired by ‘The Bell Jar,’ in which Sylvia Plath wrote the phrase ‘I am, I am, I am.’” The song was one of the last that the singer and bandmates Jacob Butler (guitar) and brothers Josh (bass) and Cris (drums) Arteaga finished while making the album last spring. “All the stuff I was doing vocally just wasn’t working, and the song almost didn’t make it onto the album,” Sebghati says. “Jacob came up with a great vocal melody at the last moment and saved the song. The majority of the lyrics on the album are about the experiences of my different emotions, and I wanted this to be the culmination of all of it.” Here, she makes “I am a girl / cutting through a man’s world” sound like a done deal.
