Midnight Sister

Midnight Sister is the collaboration between of Juliana Giraffe and Ari Balouzian, a pair of San Fernando Valley twentysomethings who make the slinky kind of music you’d hear at a secret Foxygen afterparty with a strict dress code. It was announced today that the duo have signed to Jagjaguwar (home to Foxygen), which will release their debut album later this year. Giraffe, 23, reared on a musical diet of disco and David Bowie, has worked in fashion, directed videos for Alex Izenberg and Los Angeles Police Department and co-starred in the most recent video from SadGirl. The classically trained Balouzian, 27, has collaborated with the likes of Tobias Jesso Jr. and Izenberg. The duo’s first single, the oozing, 2 1/2-minute “Leave You,” pillages pop’s past, and its video, co-directed by Juliana Giraffe and her sister Nicky, displays the same decades-ago fashion sense. In both aesthetics, there’s a strong sense Midnight Sister are very good at playing dress-up, so enjoy their first period piece.
