What does one risk for love? How far do you go? Do we grow where we are planted? Those are the questions to contemplate in the very personal video for Holland Belle’s “Grow Toward the Light,” from the singer-songwriter’s debut EP “Wanderlust.” The video follows Belle through several European capitals — to her, strange places all — and was made by her boyfriend, filmmaker James Pillion, during a period “growth” became a central theme in their relationship. Pillion had been deported from the U.S. and taken up residence in Berlin, with Belle back in Los Angeles.

“We were two people in love who were trying to find a way to be together again. We had been separated for over a year by thousands of miles,” Belle says. “The song was always about change and growth. How uncomfortable it can be, how painful. In my case, I thought the journey I was on was embracing the adventure of love. Giving myself over to it completely, risks and all. But as I release the video, I know that it was really about self love, and the paths we all have to walk on our own.”

The song appears in Pillion’s new feature film, “Far From Here.” The drama, filmed in Romania, tells the story of a young couple who leaves Los Angeles for Romania so the wife can further her career. They struggle to keep their marriage afloat in a foreign country.
