Big Thief

On “Shark Smile,” Brooklyn’s Big Thief opens with all the right rhythmic ingredients of a classic swamp rock song. It’s got the snap and swagger, but a deeper listen reveals a story about a car crash, the moment one survives while their lover dies. The squealing guitar offers a contrast to singer Adrianne Lenker’s gently cool vocal delivery. In her words, “‘Shark Smile’ is the story of a car accident in which one dies and one lives. She recalls her lover leading up to the moment of the wreck, wishing she’d been taken into the next realm, too.” The song comes from the band’s new album “Capacity,” arriving June 9 on Saddle Creek Records, and follows up on some themes exploredbreached on last year’s debut, “Masterpiece.” “The songs search for a deeper level of self-acceptance, to embrace the world within and without,” Lenker says. “I think “Masterpiece” began that process, as a first reaction from inside the pain, and “Capacity” continues that examination with a wider perspective.”
