Video: Shannon Lay, ‘JHR’

Shannon Lay

Shannon Lay is responsible for 25 percent of the riotous noise in the psych-punk-grunge quartet Feels, but on her own she is quietly mesmerizing and hopeful, confrontational but in I-dare-you-to-really-share way. Her solo sets around L.A. have held audiences rapt with her disarming quietude. Last fall she released her solo album “All This Life Going Down” on Do Not Disturb Records — 10 minimalist tracks of sonic salve and bared emotions. The video for the album’s closing song, “JHR,” is the work of Brian Lee Hughes (co-founder of Castle Face Records, which released the Feels album) and Sandy Kim. It captures Lay perfectly, as she looks stone-faced into the camera while solving a Rubik’s Cube. Can you avert your eyes? Did you blink? You win, Shannon Lay. Wink.
