Premiere: Fenway, ‘The Lake’

L.A. duo Fenway, who debuted last year with three singles, have kicked off 2017 with a tender ode to a local landmark. “The Lake,” released today, isn’t merely a geographic locale, though; it’s symbolic of the common denominator shared by people who come to Los Angeles, their dreams.

“The lake in question is Echo Park,” says Joseph Lorge, who met songwriting partner Nicolette Yarbrough in the Ethnomusicology program at UCLA,, “and I think it’s a kind of reflection on the type of space that functions as a common space for everyone in our community.” Lorge says the song began as an upbeat demo that morphed after Yarbrough took it in a different direction. “The lake is a great beginning that leads to nowhere, over and over,” she says. “I had a few experiences with people (both romantic and platonic) who came to L.A. to pursue their creative goals and cavalierly walk away from it all for a different kind of life. Walking around the lake to write or hang out felt a little bit like cycling through the dates and friends who were coming and going. You’d see the faces reappear on a new lap and different ones blend in with one another. It comes across as melancholy which wasn’t exactly intentional. I really do love it here and I wasn’t terribly sad to lose some people along the way.”

Later this month, Fenway will debut a new live lineup that includes Scott Zimmerman (Street Joy) on drums, Thomas Berg (Albert and his Dreamboats) on bass and Braeden Henderson (The End of Summer) on guitar.
