Big Black Delta

After releasing two albums of heavy electronica as Big Black Delta, Jonathan Bates, the onetime singer-bassist in the band Mellowdrone, picks up a guitar for his new single — but not in the way fans of his former band might expect. “Brookes was here2a” is the first song off an album of ambient music, “WHORU812,” that Big Black Delta will release on June 2. Bates writes that the song is an homage to his late father: “When he was alive this song started as a chord progression that my father and I used to play together while drinking whiskey. He was a great musician and I wanted a nice, gentle piece of music to remind me of that.” The song’s title may or may not be a reference to James Whitmore’s heartrending “old crook” Brooks Hatlen in “The Shawshank Redemption,” but it sure it beautiful. Bates has alos announced that he will do a one-time performance of the new album in July at the Viaduct in L.A. State Historic Park, Big Black Delta’s only live gig of 2017.
