Mike Edge is guy from Los Angeles enjoys building music equipment and seems to have a thing for the color palette of the 1950s and ’60s. The first point is a fact. Edge built most of the analog recording equipment used for his self-titled EP, out now on his own label, Long Weekend Records. He’s also built mics for Dr Dre’s Aftermath studio, where he worked as an engineer and musician. You wouldn’t guess that bit from his songs, which he says take influence from the Beatles, David Bowie, Al Green, Air and Lou Reed.

On to the second point, Edge’s predilection for imagery inspired by the ’50s and ’60s comes out in his videos. The one for “I’ve Got Time” explores the passing of time through a girl hanging around in various forms of underwear, and snippets of domestic objects and foods from the golden era of gelatin-based delicacies. The same vibe carries through on “Been So Long,” which pairs his mellow, day-dreaming soft rock with a nostalgic tiki-inspired atmosphere. Edge played all the instruments on these tunes, along with the three others for the EP, with a few guest appearances from the likes of Arthur Brown (Slave, Rose Royce) on percussion and sitar, and Beck drummer Cassidy Turbin. Anyone else craving a Mai Tai right now?
