Never has a bass drop sounded more rebellious. Sudan Archives thrives in artful simplicity, where just one bold stroke of instrumentation can lift a track from good to great. Out from whirling loops of plucked and bowed violin, jangling percussion and the 23-year-old’s soft-spoken vocal harmony, we find ourselves in a tug-of-war between interlocking grooves and brace ourselves for the outset of the invitation to “Come Meh Way.” The song slowly shimmies out of earshot with that magnetic hook and a heavy-bottom bassline, putting a modern twist onto the artist’s first outing with Stones Throw Records. Although the hymnal vibe of “Come Meh May” might resonate best as a mid-album meditation, we are anxious to hear how this piece will be woven into the rare fabric of Sudan Archives’ genre-bending debut, coming this summer. Stream the track below and check out her Soundcloud for a host of self-produced material.
